Sunday's Music (Ned's Notes)

May 12: Every composer’s goal is to find his/her “voice,” meaning that, his/her music is immediately recognizable as her/his own. The first compositions of the composer of our Opening Organ Voluntary, Olivier Messiaen, were immediately recognizable as his own. To some, his music is heavenly: to others it is nothing short of irritating – but it all seems natural in context. An essential aspect of Messiaen’s music is that he composed his works to be experienced “out of time,” meaning that time (“chronos”) is suspended as we listen. The composer himself prefaced the score with words of Jesus as quoted in the Gospel according to John 17:6,11. Our Offertory Anthem is a beautiful and simple setting of words of Julian of Norwich (of whom the writings are the earliest surviving English-language works by a woman), and is sung for all mothers – past, present, and future - on this day.
