Maranatha House Churches II with Guide

Maranatha

House Churches II

Lent 2010

St. Mark's: Mission and Vision in a VUCA World

MHC Lenten Guide

As the Uncle Sam recruiting posters proclaimed “I Want You!” so the people of St. Mark’s call out “We Want You!” to participate in the Maranatha House Churches II.  Together we will be working with our Lord to lay the spiritual foundation for the rebuilding and renewal of our community-in-Christ.

Your participation will matter to you and to each one of us at St. Mark's.  Your participation will intensify your faith and make you part of the foundation of the church.  As it says in the First Letter of Peter, "Come to him, a living stone...and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house." (I Peter 2:4-5)

If you do not participate, it will be as though our foundation is missing a living stone.  It will weaken the whole community.

There are four ways for you to help build this foundation:

1.   Join a Maranatha House Church

A Maranatha House Church is a gathering of 10-12 people in a parishioner’s house for prayer, Bible study, and a discerning discussion of the questions facing our community.  To join a group, please click on the signup link and fill out the sheet, then and fax (203.966.0439), mail, call (203.966.4515) in the information.    Contact Jill Sautkulis, Chris Gruseke or Thea McGee.

Some people have said to me with much trepidation, “I have never done anything like this before.”  My response is, “You have nothing to worry about.  You are in a spiritually safe environment.  Life is short, go for it.  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain in the Lord.”

2.   Pray Maranatha ten minutes a day for St. Mark’s

Prayer is powerful and the most powerful prayer I know is Maranatha, which means ‘Come Lord Jesus’ in Aramaic.  Instead of giving up chocolate for Lent, spend ten minutes a day praying Maranatha, asking the Lord to be more profoundly present at St. Mark’s.  It will peacefully energize your life and that of the congregation. See page 4 in this Lion’s Roar for more on how to meditate using the mantra Maranatha.

3.   Come Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m. to discuss the  communal topic of the week

On Sundays at 9:00 a.m. we will gather for discerning discussion of the topics of the week. This is not a formal review of what happened in each Maranatha House Church, but a coming together to explore the appointed scripture and topical questions.

Our goal is to have everyone be a living stone in this spiritual house.

Maranatha.  Come Lord Jesus.

The Reverend Peter F. Walsh, Rector
