8th Grade House Rules

Eighth-Grade Confirmation Class “House Rules”

Instructor: The Rev. Carol Hoidra, 966-4515, ext. 102, choidra@stmarksnewcanaan.org

Class time: Wednesday evenings, 7:30 to 8:30 PM.

Please be on time – that is, ready to begin at 7:30 sharp. I will respect your time with prompt dismissals – please show respect to me and to your fellow students by arriving punctually. (Please eat dinner before you arrive – we concentrate better when we’re not thinking about doughnuts. See Homer Simpson.)

Attendance: You are permitted three excused absences from class and from church each semester. Please notify me by e-mail or by phone if you will be absent (or late).

When you arrive at church on Sundays, please sign the attendance book in the narthex. (If you attend services at another church, please bring your worship bulletin to the next class.)

Communication: Information regarding weather-related class cancellations, curriculum changes, exams, etc. will be provided via e-mail (and posted on the St. Mark’s web site). Parents: Please provide an e-mail address that you check regularly, and notify Thea in the church office of any changes to your contact information. (Thea McGee, 966-4515, ext. 111, tmcgee@stmarksnewcanaan.org) Should you have any questions or concerns as the year progresses, I hope that you will feel free to call or e-mail me directly.

House Rules: This is a church.

We will have fun, and we will have wide-ranging, potentially contentious discussions, but we will always be mindful of where we are. We will speak to each other respectfully, and only one conversation will be going on at any particular time. (I am the referee.) Cell phones should be turned off for the duration of the class, and texting is right out. Fuhgeddaboudit, as we say in New York.

What to bring to class: We will be learning about the Book of Common Prayer this year; if you have one, please bring it. (Feel free to bring a Bible, too – couldn’t hurt.)

Mostly, bring an open mind and all your questions – we won’t necessarily have answers (and we definitely won’t have easy answers!), but living with questions is an important part of the journey. Let’s go!
