Sunday's Music (Ned's Notes)

May 5: At the Offertory, the Choir offers Thomas Tallis’ If ye love me, perhaps his most well-known and loved choral work. Tallis’ success and reputation, during a career that spanned the English Reformation (and after), was such that he served four monarchs - Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I – and was able to stay in good graces with each, whether they were Catholic or Protestant. Our Opening Organ Voluntary, Master Tallis’ Testament by Herbert Howells, does not quote directly from the music of Tallis, but invokes the spirit of his music in a set of variations, ending quietly and reverently. Howell’s Paean, our Closing Organ Voluntary, begins with a fast-moving flurry of 16th notes, followed by a quiet, yet unsettled middle section; building to a return of the initial musical then, ending with a dramatic fanfare played by our “party horn” (as we organists like to call our loudest trumpet stop!).
